UMD Global STEWARD publishes in Nature

Posted on December 1, 2021

UMD Global STEWARD Sarah Ponte recently published an article in Nature Scientific Reports investigating the transpiration rates of red maple trees in urban forests of Maryland. Over the last four years, Sarah and her colleagues analyzed how water movement through trees in urban areas could decrease stormwater. The study could help determine whether to preserve forests or plant new trees when considering new urban developments, and thereby help cities determine the best practices for managing stormwater.

UMD Global STEWARD investigates the disproportionate burden of flooding in underserved communities

Posted on June 30th, 2020

Global STEWARD Bridget Kerner studies disaster events and the physical inequities of the built environment in marginalized communities like North Brentwood and Baltimore City with her advisor Dr. Marccus Hendricks in his  Stormwater Infrastructure Resilience and Justice Lab (SIRJ). They have discovered residential segregation based on economic, political and social policy that, for hundreds of years, has limited Black and Brown communities in where they can live. The flooding events that impact these communities are not just a side effect of climate change, but the convergence of climate, aging infrastructure, disinvestment and a legacy of systemic racial injustice. Read more about their reserach here: https://www.arch.umd.edu/news-events/troubled-waters-rising-floodwaters-and-toll-marginalized-communities

Global STEWARDS host a workshop for the Maryland 4-H Congress

Posted on June 27, 2019

The Global STEWARDS conducted a workshop entitled “Rethink Your Waste” for students of the Maryland 4-H Congress held at the University of Maryland in June 2019. The 4-H Congress provides Maryland high school students an opportunity to connect with their land grant university while learning about academic and career options, attending workshops and tours on campus, enjoying campus recreational activities. The Global STEWARDS discussed the importance of proper waste management and waste reduction, and emphasized these concepts by playing a “Waste Game” where teams of students sorted mixed waste into “Recycle”, “Trash” and “Compost” bins. The students also learned about options for reuse of food and animal waste, including composting and turning waste into energy.
